Blu-ray group approves 128GB BDXL format
2010-09-01

The Blu-ray Disc Association on Friday finalized its proposed BDXL format for Blu-ray discs. The advance will allow up to 128GB of storage space on write-once and rewritable discs. BDXL will be aimed mostly at video producers and others who need to write a large amount of data to a removable backup, with triple-layer 100GB rewritable (RE) and write-once (R) discs as well as quadruple-layer 128GB R discs.

1TB Blu-ray disc burner
2010-08-11

Sony researchers, in conjunction with researchers at Tohoku University in Japan, have made a blue violet laser which is capable of creating 1000GB discs. Current single-layer Blu-ray discs can store 25GB of data, with dual layer discs able to store 50GB of data. TDK and Sharp have recently announced 100GB BDXL discs, but even this is achieved by multiplying the disc layers to four.

3D Blu-ray Disc
2010-07-07

The Blu-ray Disc Association created a task force made up of executives from the film industry and the consumer electronics and IT sectors to help define standards for putting 3D film and 3D television content on a Blu-ray Disc.  BDA officially announced 3D specs for Blu-ray Disc, allowing backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray players. "The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the "Stereo High" profile defined by Multiview Video Coding (MVC), an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% overhead compared to equivalent 2D content, and can provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players." This means the MVC (3D) stream is backward compatible with H.264/AVC (2D) stream, allowing older 2D devices and software to decode stereoscopic video streams, ignoring additional information for the second view.

Blu-ray officially lands; HD-DVD on shaky ground
2010-06-23

Blu-ray Disc Working Group yesterday officially launched Blu-ray to the Australian market. Representatives from sectors supporting the format were at the launch displaying players, films and large high definition displays.

Blu-ray will be sold to the public as an “experience”, according to Scott Browning, JB Hi-Fi marketing director. It is expected that a marriage of HD displays, powerful surround sound systems and title availability will drive the uptake of the new format. According to projections from GfK, 90% of TVs in Australia are expected to be HDTV-capable by 2010.

Low volume copy-protection for DVD
2010-06-11

4B Martinvest are pleased to be able to offer a copy-protection solution for low volume DVD video duplication. Called Patronus, it provides reliable anti-rip protection for DVDs for numbers as low as 50 copies.

Methods to protect disc content from casual copying have been available for years, however the discs needed to be pressed meaning you would need to have over 1000 discs manufactured - often hundreds more than were actually needed

Increase Your DVD storage
2010-05-18

With the High Definition videos, photos, files, etc. are everywhere, larger storage drives, CDs and DVDs are necessary. Standard DVDs can hold 4.7 Gigabyte of files but Dualy DVDs have 8.5 Gigabytes worth of space. It makes DVD duplication specially for High Definition videos easy and great! It holds pretty much almost twice amount of capacity than regular DVD.

PTProtect software is applied to the DVD image just before burning
2010-04-09

PTProtect software is applied to the DVD image just before burning. When content is burned to a disc it is encapsulated to prevent common ripping programs from having access to it. The content on the DVD is not modified in any way. Copy control encapsulation resides in areas of the discs not read by DVD players, so the play-back quality remains unaffected.

PTProtect copy controlled discs have full playability designed to match the same playability levels in DVD players as unprotected DVDs. In essence, PTProtected discs are designed to provide effective “speed-bump” protection to combat unauthorized casual copying.

Multidirectional V-shape pits
2010-03-22

Japanese scientists have proposed a new method for storing more data on optical discs by using arrays of multidirectional V-shape pits.

Current high-density optical recording systems in combination with a blue laser diode and a high numerical aperture (NA) optics have increased the capacity of optical disks to a 20 Gbits level in the Blu-ray system. For further increase of the data storage capacity, technologies such as a holographic data storage, a polarization multiplex recording system, a multilayer optical disk have now been developed.

6x BD-R and BD-R DL media
2010-03-15

Now release its first 6x BD-R and BD-R DL media

The new 6x BD-R media offer have a wide power margin at any writing speeds from 1X to 6X. In addition, Imation unveiled the first BD-R DL media for 6x recording. Both types of discs will be available.

The company will offer the new Blu-ray discs in versions for both recording (for BD recorders) and data (for PC use). All new products feature TDK’s Durabis 2 hard coating layer for enhanced protection against dust and scratches.

22X writing speeds DVD
2010-03-09

(PLDS) is introducing a new generation of 4 different DVD writers, all with 22X writing speeds and a unique data erasing feature for DVD±R (DL) and CD-R discs.

By increasing the DVD writing speed to 22X, the Lite-On internal DVD writers offers an up to date solution for those users who are looking for the fastest DVD writing speeds on the market. But what makes the Lite-On DVD writers stand out from the crowd is its capability to permanently erase the content of DVD±R (DL) and CD-R discs. Lite-On has developed the SmartErase technology to give users the possibility to permanently erase those discs that contained confidential data that should not be retrievable in any way.

NEW SILVER "G-Dye"
2010-02-06

The quality of CD-R discs is constantly improving. The latest formulation is almost pure silver in color and has the designation "G-Dye" in the first few characters of the code written on the clear inner rim.
Some Memorex discs, and some other brand discs, are now in the new G-Dye media, and before long, all the major brands will be only in G-dye media.

It is expected that G-Dye media from a good manufacturer will work at 12x, and G-dye media is claimed to have a lifespan of hundreds of years (if properly stored - see my previous article on caring for CD-Rs).
The Memorex spindle G-dye discs are the shiny kind that have only a lacquer layer over the reflective layer, and do not have the secondary paint layer which provides extra protection and identifies the top side.
